Our History

When Neighborhood Justice Center opened its doors in 1973 on 500 Laurel Street in the heart of the Rondo community, Saint Paul was a different place. The 1970s marked an era of protests— both for civil rights and a demand for social and racial justice. Grassroots activism and civic engagement meant community members were stepping up to actively shape their neighborhoods.

Neighborhood Justice Center was born from a vision of a more just criminal justice system, free from racism and discrimination.

Our team of community advocates and attorneys carry on the legacy of our founders and we work today to address the same inequities that continue to plague our justice system.

Neighborhood Justice Center possesses a rich history of past directors, board members, and staff attorneys who have influenced the trajectory of the organization in numerous ways, cementing our commitment to compassionate and just legal representation. We work in the same office where it all began—directly in the community and for the community.

Meet our current board of directors, and our team of attorneys.
